A Considerate Manager Helps An Employee Address His Excessive Drinking After A Destroyed Relationship
Barry got suspended from high school when he was seventeen years old and eventually got a job at a local tire manufacturer. For the last five-and-a-half years he has earned a reputation as a hard-working employee who hardly ever takes off from work because of illness.
Around six months ago he began dating a woman named Carol. They seemed to hit it off immediately and looked like they had a lot of fun together.
When Barry met Carol, he rarely drank. This situation totally changed when Barry and Carol started seeing each other on a fairly regular basis. In truth, their relationship was going fine until Carol called Barry one night about 4 AM and told him that she had to breakup and that she couldn't tell him what was going on at that time.
The next morning before he went to work, Barry went to Carol's condo and immediately discovered that she had already moved out. Barry took this really hard. If truth be told, he was stunned because they seemed to be getting along so very well.
So what did Barry do about Carol's departure? Rather than letting himself go through the grieving process, he began getting drunk nearly every night. It didn't take very long for his fellow employees and for his manager to notice that Barry was coming to work late at least three times every week and that he repeatedly called off sick. Not only this but some of his fellow employees made an appointment with staff in the HR Department and stated that Barry constantly came to work with a noticeable smell of alcohol on his clothes or on his breath.
Barry's boss heard about all of this from Human Resources and also from Barry's fellow employees. So one Monday morning he asked Barry to come into his office. He mentioned to Barry that he had recently noticed a definite change in his attendance, behavior, work performance, and in his sick time.
"Barry, I am not an expert about alcohol facts and I'm not particularly well-educated about alcoholism facts, but I have personally seen several of my friends and relatives experience some really damaging issues due to their excessive and hazardous drinking. My suggestion is that you learn more facts about alcohol and what alcoholism and alcohol abuse can do to an individual."
"Why is this important? When people involve themselves in abusive and hazardous drinking, their drinking issues not only adversely affect the alcohol abuser, but they also make a negative impact on her or his friends, family, relatives, neighbors, and co-workers. Barry, in short, I want you to get some help for your irresponsible and hazardous drinking from our employee's assistance program."
Barry respected his manager quite a lot and as a consequence followed through with his suggestion the next morning when he called and scheduled an appointment with a healthcare practitioner in the company's employee's assistance program. Although Barry didn't necessarily feel any better or less depressed about the sorrow he still feels for Carol, he felt some comfort knowing that his manager and his co-workers cared about him and wanted what's best for him. This gave Barry some emotional relief for the first time in quite a few weeks and he actually experienced some hope that he would get back on track with his life.
